Cuarenta
Terms of Use
Last updated 26 October 2026
These terms are the rules for playing Cuarenta. The short version:
- Cuarenta is free to play, with ads. Cuarenta Plus removes the ads, and Apple handles its payments.
- It's a game for fun: no real money, no bets and no prizes.
- Online, choose a decent name, play fair, and share table codes only with people you want to play with.
- Your rights as a consumer always stay in place, whatever these terms say.
About these terms
Cuarenta is made by Raymon de Looff, an independent developer in the Netherlands ("I", "me"). These terms apply to the Cuarenta app on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro, its online play, and cuarenta.app. By using them, you agree to these terms.
Your licence to use the app comes from Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the Standard EULA), which you accept when you download the app from the App Store. These terms add the rules for Cuarenta's own services. If the two ever disagree about your licence to the app, the Standard EULA wins.
How I handle your data is explained in the Privacy Policy.
The game
Cuarenta is free to play against the computer or online with friends. The free game shows ads from Google between games on iPhone and iPad. It's a game for fun: there is no real money, betting or gambling of any kind, and points, wins, stars and achievements have no money value and can't be exchanged for anything.
Cuarenta Plus
Cuarenta Plus removes the ads, on every device signed in to the same Apple Account. You can buy it as a monthly or yearly subscription, or once, as Lifetime. The app shows each plan's price and period before you buy.
- Payment. Apple sells Cuarenta Plus and charges your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase. Apple's Media Services Terms apply to the purchase.
- Renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period, at the same price, until you cancel. Cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends, in your Apple Account's subscription settings. You keep Cuarenta Plus until the end of the period you paid for.
- Price changes. If a subscription's price changes, Apple tells you beforehand and, where the law requires, asks you to agree.
- Refunds. Apple handles refunds, including your right of withdrawal in the EU, under its own terms. You can ask for one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Lifetime is a single payment, and lasts for as long as I offer Cuarenta and it runs on your devices.
- New device? Use Restore Purchases on the Cuarenta Plus page to get Cuarenta Plus back with the same Apple Account.
Playing online
Online play is free. Anyone with a table's code or link can join it until its first game begins, so share it only with people you want to play with. A table is deleted an hour after its last game began.
The name you choose is shown to everyone at your table. It must not:
- be offensive, hateful, sexual, threatening or harassing;
- pretend to be someone else;
- contain someone's personal details, contact details, links or ads.
And when you play:
- don't cheat, or use bugs to your advantage (please report them to me instead);
- don't use bots or modified apps, or try to overload, disrupt or break into the game server.
If someone breaks these rules, I may end their table or keep their device from playing online. If someone at your table uses an offensive name, leave the table and email support@cuarenta.app with the table's code.
Who owns what
The Cuarenta app, its code, artwork, cards and text belong to me. The traditional game of Cuarenta belongs to everyone. The Alegreya typeface is used under the SIL Open Font License. The name you choose stays yours; you give me permission to show it to the other players at your table for as long as the table exists.
Other companies' services
Purchases, iCloud sync and Game Center are provided by Apple, under Apple's own terms. Ads come from Google and its advertisers, and I'm not responsible for what they offer. If you see an ad that seems wrong, email me and I'll look into it.
Guarantees and liability
I make Cuarenta with care, but I can't promise that it, or online play, will always be available or free of bugs, or that a game in progress can never be lost. To the extent the law allows, Cuarenta is provided "as is", and I'm not liable for indirect losses, such as lost profits or lost data.
None of this limits your rights as a consumer under the law where you live, including your rights if the app or Cuarenta Plus doesn't work as it should, or my liability for intent, gross negligence, death or personal injury.
Stopping
You can stop using Cuarenta at any time by deleting the app; remember to cancel a Cuarenta Plus subscription too, as deleting the app doesn't. I may change or stop the app or online play. Where I reasonably can, I'll announce that in the app in good time.
Changes to these terms
I may update these terms, for example when the app changes. I'll change the date at the top, and announce important changes in the app's update notes before they take effect. If you keep using Cuarenta after that, the new terms apply. If you don't agree with them, stop using Cuarenta and cancel any subscription.
- 26 October 2026: questions and reports now go to the support address.
- 14 October 2026: first version.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by Dutch law. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory law of the country where you live. If something goes wrong, please email me first, and we'll try to sort it out together. If we can't, the competent court in the Netherlands can decide, or, if you are a consumer, the courts where you live.
